Also, you may want to try the following command to install the dfu image manually. I always run "make program", but according to the make file, this is what is executed:

dfu-util --device 1fc9:000c --alt 0 --download hackrf_usb.dfu

I hope this works for you Graham, pulling out your hair is no fun, but its awesome when you finally figure it out.
