CMC OUTINGS SCHEDULE

May 16th -17th Saturday- Sunday Owens River Gorge/Alabama
Hills Climbing

Both of these areas are known for their excellent sport climbing, but there
are trad routes available too. We will visit one or both of these areas
according to the desires of the participants. This trip is open to anyone
who is interested, regardless of ability. However climbing at the Gorge
starts at about 5.7 and is quite steep so participants should be prepared.

May 23rd-25th Saturday - Monday Royce &
Merriam Peaks

We'll meet Saturday at the Pine Creek trailhead (7,400') and climb to the
Royce Lakes area where we'll setup camp, approx. 7-8 miles. Sunday climb
Merriam (13,103') and Royce Peaks (13'280') and back to camp. Monday, pack
up and pack out! Ice axe and crampons may be required. Contact Paul:

June 5th-7th Friday - Sunday Thompson Peak (9,002 ft)
in the Trinity Alps

Thompson Peak is the highest Peak in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, a vast
assemblage of craggy granite mountains in northwestern California (Trinity
Alps Wilderness is the second largest designated wilderness area in
California). Thompson Peak is the second highest mountain in Northern
California west of the Cascades, after 9027 feet Mount Eddy. Due to the
geographical location of these mountains, they contain elements of the
Cascades to the north and Sierras to the south. Their height is not
impressive when compared with the Sierras, but their higher latitude and
proximity to the Pacific Ocean allow for significant winter snow
accumulation and the existence of a few small glaciers. Thompson Peak is
usually climbed from Canyon Creek Trail, ascending the class 2-3 South Ridge
from the east. This route has a 8000 feet elevation gain, and is about 10
miles one way. I would also like to look into climbing some other peaks in
the area as well. Day one would consist of backpacking to camp at one of the
many lakes in the drainage. Day two would be to summit Thompson Peak (as
well as Hilton Peak and Caesar Peak). Day three would be an option climb of
Sawtooth Peak before hiking out.

June 20th Saturday
Mount San Jacinto

Conditioning hike of Mount San Jacinto (10,834')
Start at Marion Mountain trailhead parking area above the town of Alandale
(directions will be provided if needed). Hike the well-used, but steep
Marion trail through the forest of Jeffrey pine, California oak and
manzanita. The trail passes by small waterfalls and the junction with Deer
Springs trail before it arrives to Little Round Valley in about 4.1 miles
from the trailhead. From here the trail follows long switchbacks to the
junction with the PCT, past the stone shelter and on to the summit of Mt San
Jacinto. The views from the summit include San Bernadino and San Gabriel
mountains as well as the surrounding desert. Descend the same way.
The hike is about 5.5 miles long (one way) with 4600' of elevation gain.
Bring hiking boots/trail runners along with sunscreen and water/energy
snacks. Hiking poles may help. This is a conditioning hike, so ideally we
will not stop for too long (or not at all).

June 20th Saturday Mount
Pinos (Frazier Park area)

Mtn. Bike trip. This is one of SoCal's premier mtn. bike routes. The ride
consists of a uphill pedal on pavement to the top of Mount Pinos (very few
cars use this road). Then a blast down a smooth dirt trail that traverses
three sides of the mountain. The whole trip is in the high pines with a
meadow or two that you go through. A great summer workout! This trip is
open to anyone who is interested, regardless of ability. Altitude is from
approx. 6500' ft. to 8800' ft. Drive time from the San Fernando Valley is
approx. 45 minutes. If interested contact John Grisbach:
