EVERY $100 YIELDS $150!

Each year at this time the Grand Teton Climbers’ Ranch participates in the fundraising program of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. The Foundation adds a 50% matching grant to donations made for the benefit of participating non-profit organizations in Teton County, Wyoming, including the Climbers’ Ranch. These very generous matching grants mean that for every $100 donated, we actually receive $150. The same 50% match applies to donations of $10, $50, or any other amount.

In early June, about 35 volunteers once again gathered at the Climbers’ Ranch for the traditional Work Week, and performed all of the cleaning and maintenance necessary to prepare for a new season. All the old log structures on the property were stained, decks and porches waterproofed, and numerous carpentry and plumbing repairs were made. Later in June, all of the bear-proof trash and recycling cans at the Climbers’ Ranch were replaced for the first time since 1970. These new bear-proof cans, in full compliance with National Park Service standards, cost a total of $4,000. In June it was also necessary to replace the ranch washing machine, heavily used by guests and staff alike, at a cost of nearly $1,000. The annual expenses of Work Week, and the purchase of equipment such as bear-proof trash cans and appliances, with other major items, are all paid for with funds the Climbers’ Ranch receives through our annual fundraising drive. The American Alpine Club could not afford to operate the Climbers’ Ranch without the consistent generosity of our donors. Because of this annual fundraising program, we are able to maintain and improve the ranch while at the same time keeping our lodging rates very low, still only $16 per night for AAC members and $25 per night for non-members.

When the Climbers’ Ranch opened in 1970, Nick Clinch was the President of the AAC, and wrote at the time that “It would be impossible to get a better ranch in a better location.” Everyone who has since visited the ranch, stood directly beneath the spectacular peaks of the Teton Range, and set off from their cabin door to explore those heights, knows that Nick Clinch was exactly right. The Climbers’ Ranch is a small precious place within a great precious place, and as the ranch is a gift we have received down the years, so it is now our gift to preserve for the future.
