NOMMA ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2025 GRADUATES
Ceremony takes place Saturday, May 17, at Alario Center
The New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy (NOMMA) will hold its graduation ceremony this Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m. at the John Alario Sr. Event Center, 2000 Segnette Blvd., Westwego. State Representative Delisha Boyd will deliver the commencement address.
NOMMA’s 2025 Valedictorian is Cadet Adrian Topete and the Salutatorian is Cadet Zakariyya Zahran.
Valedictorian Cadet Adrian Topete is the first cadet in NOMMA’s 14-year history to receive an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he plans to study mechanical engineering before beginning his career as a commissioned officer in the military. Cadet Topete, who currently serves as the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) Battalion Commander, exemplifies the academy’s core values through outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and character, holding the highest rank awarded to an MCJROTC Cadet, Cadet Colonel. At NOMMA, he has been a member of the varsity powerlifting and cross-country teams, the MCJROTC Armed Drill Team, and served as a Cadet Mentor and Technology Team member. Cadet Topete has received numerous awards, including the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement—a national honor given to just one Marine Corps JROTC cadet among 6,000 in his region. Adrian is the youngest son of LtCol Freddy Topete (USMC) and Mrs. Aracely Topete.
Salutatorian Cadet Zakariyya Zahran will continue his studies in computer science at the University of New Orleans, where he is the recipient of the Homer Hitt Scholarship, which offers full tuition. He is a Cadet Captain in the MCJROTC program, where his exemplary character, discipline, and drive helped him rise to the top of his class. In addition to his academic and leadership achievements, Cadet Zahran, a skilled piano player, was a member of the NOMMA band, the CyberPatriot Team, and the Technology Team. Known for his passion for coding, Zakariyya plans to turn that passion into a career in computer programming. He is the son of Mr. Walid Zahran and Ms. Kimberly Zahran.
