NOMMA Valedictorian Earns Historic Appointment to U.S. Naval AcademyFirst in School’s 14-Year History to Receive This Prestigious Honor

The New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy (NOMMA)—Louisiana’s only public charter military high school—is proud to announce that its 2025 Valedictorian, Cadet Adrian Topete, has become the first student in the school’s 14-year history to receive an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Cadet Topete plans to study Mechanical Engineering before beginning his career as a commissioned officer in the U.S. military.

“Cadet Topete embodies the values and mission of NOMMA,” said Principal Alexis Long. “His achievements are an inspiration to our cadets and a proud milestone for our school community.”

Cadet Topete currently serves as NOMMA’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) Cadet Battalion Commander—the highest-ranking cadet leadership position. He holds the distinguished rank of Cadet Colonel, exemplifying leadership, character, and academic excellence.

In addition to his academic and leadership roles, Cadet Topete has actively participated in NOMMA’s varsity powerlifting and cross-country teams, the MCJROTC Armed Drill Team, and he served as both a Cadet Mentor and a member of the Technology Team. Among his many accolades, he received the prestigious Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement—an honor awarded to only one Marine Corps JROTC cadet out of more than 6,000 in his region.

Cadet Topete is the youngest son of LtCol Freddy Topete, USMC, and Mrs. Aracely Topete, and currently resides with his family in New Orleans.

NOMMA is a top-rated open admissions public charter 8-12 high school adjacent to the Marine Forces Reserve national headquarters in Federal City and serving all students from the metro area. All students are enrolled as cadets in the U.S. Marines Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), led by Commandant Col Chris Schlafer, USMC (Ret) and Principal Alexis Long.
