In reference to Councilmember Fielkow's resignation, my office has been gathering
advice and legal opinions from all necessary sources.  We have distributed this 
information to all Councilmembers today.

Contained within these informative packets were the following:


* Resignation letter from Arnie Fielkow to Secretary of State, Tom Schedler; date
stamped to return receipt of certified letter.
* Secretary of State's response to this letter sent to our Clerk of Council acknowledging
receipt of resignation letter and outlining the next steps of the process.
* City of New Orleans Law Department research memorandum: Calling of Special Election
for Council Vacancy
* Legal Opinion regarding date to set election to replace Councilmember Fielkow 
as well as the appointment of interim Councilmember by Council's Legal Counsel, 
Steve Lane.
* State of Louisiana Attorney General's Opinion Re: Calling of Special Election 
to replace Councilmember Fielkow
* Copy of Resolution R-11-407

Based upon the information included in this packet, Resolution R-11-407 will be 
introduced at the September 1, 2011 Council meeting.  It calls for a special election
to be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 to fill the unexpired term of the Office 
of Councilmember-at-Large for the City of New Orleans, with a run-off if needed,
 to be held on Saturday, April 11, 2012 and with qualifying beginning on December
7, 2011 and ending on December 9, 2011.

A press release will follow momentarily from Councilmember Susan Guidry, Chair of
Governmental Affairs Committee, and myself, outlining the process for the appointment
of an interim Councilmember.
