Website Launched to Help Candidates
   To encourage more citizens to run for public office, a new web site has launched to offer guidance and tips to first-time candidates for local offices.
   Howtogetelected.com is a non-partisan effort initiated by independent journalist John Maginnis, who has taught classes on running for office since 2004.
   "Too many good people are scared off from running because of the stress and ugliness of politics, but also for a lack of knowledge about the basics of how an election campaign should work," said Maginnis, who looks for the site to reach a national audience.
   Consultant and CNN contributor James Carville and former governor Buddy Roemer lead a cast of over 20 consultants and candidates, whose tips for candidates will appear on the site. The site will offer a video "Tip of the Day" through the election season. A DVD with a step-by step guide to running for office is also available at Howtogetelected.com.
   Maginnis said the site will show how candidates running for the smallest office on tight budgets can adopt the strategies, tactics and technologies used in major campaigns. Another objective, said Maginnis, is to show prospective candidates "how to win any election without losing their family, fortune, health and reputation. Winning should not have to come at all costs."
