Tomorrow, Tuesday, August9, at 1:30 PM in the City Council Chamber, the City Planning Commission willtake up a request to approve a 205-foot building at the corner of Canal and NorthRampart Streets.
French Quarter Citizensasks that that you join us there to show that you support smart and reasonabledevelopment for that iconic site, respect for the Master Plan and an orderlyplanning process, encouragement for the theater district, and protection forthe historic French Quarter.
· Support development that respects its surroundings, especially the French Quarter and our new theater district, which will be amajor New Orleansattraction in years to come.
· Support development consistent with the Master Plan —remember, we voted to give it the force of law to get away from special favorsand spot zoning.
· Support development in line with the proposedComprehensive Zoning Ordinance — 120 feet high — that can also be profitable, according to an analysis made by the Downtown Development District (DDD).
· Oppose a 205-foot, 573,000 square foot building loomingover the Saenger Theater and the theater district and dwarfing neighboringstructures on Canal and North Rampart Streets.
· Oppose special favors for a developer, who got theproperty cheap and wants to disregard existing (and proposed) zoning rules, theMaster Plan, and the views of every city agency that has considered theproposal.
· Stand with those who defend maintaining the historicambiance of the French Quarter, New Orleans’s economic powerhouse — and the place we live.
· Stand with neighbors, community advocacy organizations, preservationists, city planners, and all those who believe that development is necessary but mustalso respect our traditions and neighborhoods.
Join us at the CityPlanning Commission meeting Tuesday, August 9 at 1:30 PM in the City CouncilChambers, 1300 Perdido Street.
