ACTION ALERT

e-mail needed by this Tuesday, June 9

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please Help Protect the Future of Kennedy Meadows and the Surrounding
Emigrant Wilderness
A short e-mail letter from you can help prevent Kennedy Meadows from being
transferred to the highly anti-conservation Board of Supervisors of Tuolumne
County.
Kennedy Meadows (just off Hwy 108 near Sonora Pass) is a privately owned
resort that also serves as a major trailhead into the Emigrant Wilderness.
The property currently belongs to the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E)
and for the past two years it has been the focus of intense debate. As part
of its bankruptcy settlement, PG&E agreed to donate excess lands (including
Kennedy Meadows) to an appropriate donee in order to provide long-term
public benefits for natural resources and recreation.
The PG&E Stewardship Lands Council is about to decide whether to give this
iconic property to Tuolumne County or to the U.S. Forest Service. While the
Stanislaus National Forest has often done a poor job of managing the wild,
roadless areas and the Emigrant Wilderness that lie adjacent to Kennedy
Meadows, the situation would become much worse if local county officials
gain control.
The Forest Service has promised to carefully regulate the pack station and
resort if it gains ownership. If it does not do a good job, we at least have
the benefit of clear federal laws, regulations, and appeal opportunities. In
contrast, if Tuolumne County ends up being the donee, it will almost
certainly continue its anti-conservation policies that have been the norm
for Tuolumne County for decades, and our opportunities to be involved in
decisions affecting the area will be much diminished. The County has
publicly promised to keep the pack station and other resort operations as
they have been functioning up to this time - without any changes to
ameliorate the ongoing pollution caused by the commercial operations. In
fact, the Tuolumne County supervisors passed a resolution calling for a
reduction in the regulatory restrictions that now protect wildlife and other
resources.
The PG&E Stewardship Council votes on Wednesday, June 10. Please tell them
that the U.S. Forest Service would be a much better manager for Kennedy
Meadows.
Send your email by Tuesday, June 9 to the Stewardship Council at:
kennedymeadows at stewardshipcouncil.org
In your own words urge the Stewardship Council to donate Kennedy Meadows to
the U.S. Forest Service.
. Point out that Tuolumne County has a long history of taking positions and
adopting policies that favor logging, mining, ranching, and development
instead of protecting the environment and recreational quality. Tuolumne
County is consistently anti-conservation in its decisions and actions.
Tuolumne County supervisors are close allies of the pack station and will
favor economic uses over protecting the river, the meadow system, wildlife,
and the surrounding Emigrant Wilderness.
. You might mention that people from all over California travel to the
Sonora Pass area to visit the wilderness areas around Kennedy Meadows, and
those people will benefit the most if the Forest Service manages Kennedy
Meadows.
. Share any other reasons why a politically conservative local county
government is not the best choice for the long-term ownership of a key
wilderness trailhead and a stretch of river that is eligible for wild and
scenic status.
Please do NOT include this alert with your email !!! And, please mix up the
above points, and re-state them in your own words !!!
Together, we can make a difference.
