HYNES CHARTER SCHOOL TEACHER HONORED WITH NATIONAL STEM AWARD
Dr. Thomas Wright Recognized by Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
NEW ORLEANS, LA – Hynes Charter School-Lakeview is proud to announce that Dr. Thomas Wright, a middle school mathematics teacher, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This distinguished honor, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is the highest national recognition for K-12 educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and computer science.
Dr. Wright is the recipient from Louisiana to be recognized for his excellence in mathematics teaching. Each year, the NSF selects only one science teacher, one mathematics teacher, and one STEM teacher from each state for this prestigious award.
Dr. Wright has been an educator in the Orleans Parish Public School system for over 15 years. As a Louisiana recipient of a PAEMST, he joins an elite group of educators eligible to receive this national accolade, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
The PAEMST program honors up to 110 teachers annually across the United States, Washington D.C., and its territories. Awardees receive:
● A certificate signed by the President of the United States
● A $10,000 award from the NSF
● An all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events and professional development opportunities
Since 1983, more than 5,500 educators have received this award, which celebrates the exceptional expertise and dedication of teachers who positively impact student achievement.
“Teaching is not just a profession, but a vocation—a commitment to lifelong learning,” said Dr. Wright. “There’s no greater reward than witnessing students who once hesitated with math embrace challenges and discover a newfound appreciation for Algebra by the end of the year.”
Dr. Wright will be honored at a special ceremony hosted by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry this summer at the Governor’s Mansion.
“Dr. Wright is an extraordinary teacher who inspires a love for math among his students,” said Dawn Lobell, Principal of Hynes Charter School-Lakeview. “His innovative teaching methods make math engaging and accessible, and this recognition is a testament to his hard work and dedication.”
In addition to his role at Hynes Charter School, Dr. Wright previously served as an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of New Orleans (UNO). His numerous accolades include being named the 2014 District Teacher of the Year, Hynes Teacher of the Year, and the 2013 New Orleans Saints Middle School Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Wright’s impressive academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Mathematics Curriculum & Instruction with a minor in Quantitative and Qualitative Research, an MBA from UNO, and a Master’s in Educational Administration from Xavier University of Louisiana. He also holds two undergraduate degrees from Louisiana Tech University.
Hynes Charter Schools have been a pillar of academic excellence for over 70 years, recently earning recognition as a Cognia® System of Distinction, an honor awarded to only 60 schools worldwide. The Hynes network includes: Hynes-Lakeview (PK3–8); Hynes-UNO (K–5, growing annually to K–8) and Hynes-Parkview (K–8).
