As they prepare to announce their 7th year of awardees for the 431 Exchange Scholarship Program, 17 graduates and faculty of the groundbreaking Adult Education Center, founded in 1965 to integrate New Orleans corporate offices with trained Black women, will reunite to reinforce their determination to shape the future careers of Louisiana residents, announced Jeanne Geoffray, the daughter of AEC Founder Dr. Alice R. Geoffray.

In December, 1965, a small vocational school known as the Adult Education Center welcomed an integrated class of mostly Black underemployed women to begin training to become the first secretaries to integrate the all-white corporate offices of New Orleans. The effort caused an uproar at the time. The first pilot program was shut down due to public outrage at the school’s integrated student population but one brave landlord, James J. Coleman, agreed to help reopen the school in a building on Exchange Place in the French Quarter. During its period of operation from 1965 to 1972, the school placed 94 percent of its 431 graduates in jobs with salaries above the national average, thus making it one of the most successful programs of its kind in the War on Poverty.

Today, this program and its founder Dr. Alice R. Geoffray is memorialized by the Orleans Parish School Board in the naming of its former McDonogh 35 school building at 1331 Kerlerec in honor of Dr. Geoffray and her groundbreaking program. The legacy of the school continues through the 431 Exchange, a foundation that annually awards continuing education scholarships.
