THE NOMMA CLASS OF 2024 GRADUATES SATURDAY, MAY 18
The New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy (NOMMA), a top-rated, open admissions public charter 8-12 high school adjacent to the Marine Forces Reserve national headquarters in Federal City in Algiers, will hold its graduation ceremony for the 149 cadets of the Class of 2024 this Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m., the John Alario Event Center, 2000 Segnette Blvd., Westwego.
Donald T. “Boysie” Bollinger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bollinger Enterprises, LLC, will deliver the commencement address.
NOMMA’s 2024 Valedictorian is Cadet Captain Raul Zahur, Jr; the Salutatorian is Cadet Major Evan Berry.
Valedictorian Zajur is a native of Harvey, who has consistently demonstrated excellence in honors, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment classes and has established himself as a top-ranking cadet and student. In addition to excelling academically, Cadet Zajur is trilingual in Spanish, English, and French. While at NOMMA, he played varsity soccer for four years and was captain of the soccer team for two years. He also participated in cross country in his junior and senior years, both times making it to the state championship. Additionally, Cadet Zajur was involved on the NOMMA Track and Field Team. Cadet Zajur was a member of the cadet leadership team and served as the Company Commander for the junior class. As a Cadet Captain, he was able to speak with government officials at the state capitol and share his insights about his experience at NOMMA. He enjoys playing soccer as well as landscaping, cooking, maintenance, and volunteering in his community. Next year, Cadet Zajur will attend Villanova University on a full scholarship, where he will major in Biology Pre-Med and minor in Psychology. In the future, Raul hopes to continue to serve his community by becoming a doctor. Raul’s parents are Raul and Rosa Zajur.
Salutatorian Berry is a native of Marrero, and has been a dedicated cadet and student at New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy since 8th grade. His academic journey has been marked by excellence, consistently ranking among the top students both academically and in the JROTC program. Evan’s commitment to the school community is evident in his participation in various activities, including honors and Advanced Placement classes, cadet leadership, cadet mentorship, and as a marksmanship team member. His dedication was recognized when he was appointed as the Cadet Battalion Commander, the top-ranking cadet of the 2023-2024 school year. His extracurriculars include participating in the Boy Scouts of America Program and earning the top rank of Eagle Scout. He dedicates many hours to his training as a Level 9 Competitive Acrobatic Gymnast. Next year, he will be pursuing his passion for Biomedical Mechatronic Engineering at Mississippi State University, and in the future, he hopes to develop advancements in specialized prosthetics. Evan’s parents are Laurence Berry and Lori Berry.

All students are enrolled as cadets in the U.S. Marines Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), led by Commandant Colonel Chris Schlafer (Retired, USMC) and Principal Alexis Long.
