NEW ORLEANS MILITARY AND MARITIME ACADEMY MARCHING BAND AND DRILL TEAM IN HIGH DEMAND, LOCALLY AND IN WASHINGTON D.C. The 50 cadets of the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy High School Band and the 40-member Drill Team will be featured together or separately in six Mardi Gras parades and then will prepare to represent the State of Louisiana on July 4 at the 2023 National Independence Day Parade courtesy of U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy’s invitation. Locally, the NOMMA Marching Band and/or Drill Team will be in these February Mardi Gras parades: Algiers Mardi Gras Festival, Feb. 4; Excalibur, Feb. 10; Choctaw, Feb. 11; King Arthur, Feb. 12; NOMTOC, Feb. 18; and Rex, Feb. 21. “As members of the local community, our cadets and staff take great pride in participating in these events and enjoy meeting students, families, and supporters along the Mardi Gras routes every year,” said Principal Alexis Long. The invitation to march in the largest parade celebrating the nation’s birth on July 4, however, is a tremendous honor in itself, added NOMMA Commandant Col. Chris Schlafer, USMC (Ret). “As an all-Marine Corps JROTC public high school, NOMMA emphasizes the core values and leadership principles of our country’s armed services. We have a talented and diverse corps of cadets, and they are both thrilled and honored to represent Louisiana in our National Independence Day Parade,” said Col. Schlafer. The school is currently raising funds to travel to the nation’s capital for the official July 4th Parade of the U.S., which draws over half a million spectators along its route, passing such historic landmarks as the Smithsonian Museums, the Washington Monument, and the White House along Constitution Avenue. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and the National Park Service are the official hosts. The parade runs from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on July 4.
