| Aspen Challenge Series: Public Art and Advocacy with Krewe du CypressThis is the second piece in our two-part series on the winners of the Aspen Challenge. You can continue to learn about the challenge through our profile of the Frederick A. Douglass Aspen Challenge team here.Last year, a group of Benjamin Franklin High School students declared they wanted “second lines, not rising water lines” in our city. As part of the Aspen Challenge program last year, those students formed “Krewe Du Cypress,” and began doing their part to make that vision a reality. The Aspen Challenge moves to two new cities each year, asking young people to take on some of the most pressing challenges of our time. When, with the support of NSNO, the Aspen Challenge came to New Orleans last year, they gave teams of high schoolers $500 to address one of five challenge areas: the environment, kindness and mental health, transportation, health and nutrition, and narratives of violence. | Lowered Enrollment Projections Prompt School ChangesNSNO and NOLA-PS have looked carefully at the number of students in our district alongside demographic projections for the years to come. Many schools are enrolling fewer students than they planned to or need to for long-term sustainability. Currently, we estimate we have as many as 7,100 “empty seats.” By 2026, we estimate enrollment may decrease by as much as 9%, which means the number of those empty seats could increase to up to 7,000 if changes to the number of schools aren’t made the next few years. This strains resources and will continue to be financially difficult for schools. To ensure more resources for our city’s students, over the next few years, some schools will need to combine, change locations, or close. Some shifts are already underway; the InspireNOLA network recently announced that they will combine two of their schools, 42 Charter School and Pierre Capdau Charter School, at the recently renovated Capdau campus. The newly combined school, which will be renamed Capdau S.T.E.A.M., will result in 500 fewer “empty seats” across our system. You can read more here. For more on this topic and related news:
   - In New Orleans and surrounding parishes, as in many districts nationwide, school enrollment has decreased in recent years. Read more here.
   - As citywide enrollment drops, our system will need to make some significant changes. Read more here.

| Tomorrow’s Teachers: An Inside Look at The Next Generation of Great New Orleans Educators
The Tomorrow’s Teachers Series celebrates the students and teachers of New Orleans’ “Grow Your Own” programs, a part of the state’s “Grow Your Own” Initiative. These initiatives seek to find great teachers locally, developing communities’ young people to become educators in their own school system. At NSNO, we are raising funds to support these programs. Currently, three New Orleans schools – Booker T. Washington High School, John F. Kennedy High School, and Warren Easton Charter High School are involved.

In this series, we will highlight current New Orleans public school students who are part of this program, as well as the teachers helping them prepare for that future. We’ll also meet school team members, like paraprofessionals, who are preparing for roles as full-time teachers.

Read the first piece in this series, a look at Scarlet Cornelius' work as the Director of Post-Secondary Strategy and Programming at KIPP New Orleans, here.   |

| Bright Spots: Highlighting Best Practices in New Orleans SchoolsThis month, NSNO launched the “Bright Spots” campaign to highlight best practices modeled by New Orleans educators. You can read more about the first two educators in this ongoing series here. We will be featuring more stories on our social media networks in the weeks and months to come.Young Audiences Charter Schools at Lawrence D. Crocker

NSNO is grateful to partner with Young Audiences Charter Schools at Lawrence D. Crocker in many ways. Crocker received NSNO funding for high quality “Tier 1” curriculum and participated in NSNO’s professional development “literacy collaborative.” Their principal, Xaviera Ingram, is a member of the Novice Leader Academy (NLA) and their Chief Academic Officer, Brionne Marcelle, is an E3 fellow. We spoke to fourth grade English Language Arts teacher Tiffony Pierce about one of her philosophies as an educator.

Bricolage Academy

NSNO is grateful to partner with Bricolage in many ways. Bricolage received NSNO funding for high quality “Tier 1” curriculum and participated in NSNO’s professional development “hubs” focused on special education and data. Their CEO, Antigua Wilbern, is part of NSNO’s E3 program for new and aspiring network leaders.   |

| School Performance Scores (SPS): Released for the First Time Since the Pandemic BeganOn November 16, the Louisiana Department of Education released 2021-2022 School Performance Scores (SPS). Seventy-nine percent of New Orleans Public Schools  earned an A or B letter grade for their academic progress, and the system at large maintained a C letter grade overall.New Orleans' students and educators are working hard and learning each day amidst significant challenges. Over 85% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and the challenges of poverty, coupled with the trauma and learning loss of the pandemic and Hurricane Ida, present obstacles to academic success. Despite these challenges, New Orleans schools have made up some of the ground lost from the pandemic. If our schools sustain the same pace of growth, our district will surpass our pre-pandemic scores in the next two years. For more on this topic and related news:
   - NOLA.com covered SPS on November 16th in “In school performance scores, New Orleans area school districts rebound to pre-pandemic” level”
   - Superintendent Williams gave a School Performance Score Update presentation to OPSB.
   - Louisiana’s fourth graders showed growth on the National Assessment of Educational Progress relative to other states, another encouraging indicator. You can read more coverage here.
