New Orleans Representative Kira Orange Jones elected Vice President of State Board of Education (BESE), part of first-ever all-women education board officers slate in Louisiana    The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) elected its Board officers for 2021.      The members unanimously elected District 3 BESE elected board member Sandy Holloway as President,District 2 elected board member Kira Orange Jones as Vice President, and District 5 elected board member Ashley Ellis as Secretary-Treasurer.  This marks the first time that the State's top education board has elected an all-women officer slate in its 46-year history.   “I am honored to be able to fulfill this role during these unprecedented times when our students, families, and educators deserve strong leadership,” said Orange Jones.  "I also hope that the thousands of young girls in our schools today see that anything is possible for them if three strong women can be leading our state's education system through a period of important transformation."    This week, Orange Jones was also named BESE Liaison to the Social Studies Standards Review Committee.  Since elected for the first time in 2011, she has been a consistent advocate for improved teacher compensation, quality school choice for students and families, and increased access to early childhood education.  Earlier this year, she Chaired the Superintendent search committee to identify and select a new state superintendent.     Orange Jones began her education career as a 4th Grade Teacher in Baton Rouge 20 years ago, after joining the Teach For America-South Louisiana corps.  She later founded an arts education non-profit dedicated to documentary filmmaking for young men and women of color. Recently, she launched The Community Trust, a political action committee dedicated to elevating the voices of educators and women-of-color who believe that reform-minded leadership is necessary at all levels of elected office. Her work over two decades in education has earned her recognition as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and one of Louisiana Life Magazine’s Louisianans of the Year.      This will be the second year that BESE member Sandy Holloway serves as President.  “I am grateful to my fellow Board members for entrusting me to this position,” said Holloway. “It has been a privilege to represent our Board, educators, students and the families of Louisiana over the past year and through one of the most challenging school years our state has ever faced. I am blessed to serve with two other amazing leaders on this all-women leadership team.  The exciting and valuable work ahead, that we can all achieve if we work together, includes furthering school choice, accountability, and child-centered policies that support our students and families.”    BESE sets education policy for the more than 700,000 public school students across Louisiana.  Among its responsibilities, the eleven-member board sets the overall education policy agenda for the State, acts as a major charter school authorizer, determines the funding formula, oversees education regulation, and selects and supervises the State Superintendent.
