The parents and their child choose the school they wish to attend and this power of choice has proven to improve student achievement and outcomes,” said Ms. Roemer. Louisiana boasts the only all-charter urban public school district in the nation in Orleans Parish. “We find that some parents and even some decision makers are still very uneducated about what a charter school is. A charter school is a public school like any other except it is founded and led by community leaders to fill a particular need in a community,” said Ms. Roemer. “All are free and open.” The week’s celebrations in Louisiana will model these themes, according to Ms. Roemer:
