Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools Celebrates Successes of 156 schools in 25 Parishes                The state’s leading advocate for public charter schools in Louisiana will mark National Charter Schools Week by joining America in celebrating the successes of the movement, particularly to the 80,000 K-12 students and 4000 teachers in the state’s charter schools, said Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools Executive Director Caroline Roemer. “This week, following an incredibly robust Teacher Appreciation celebration, we add our voices to the incredible gains and achievements of our students and educators in our state’s charter schools,” said Ms. Roemer. “We join 61 percent of Americans who support public charter schools, according to a 2018 EdChoiceSurvey.”             Ms. Roemer said the hallmark of the Louisiana movement, which has grown tremendously since 2005 to include online options as well as charter schools that offer language immersion, military/maritime focus, arts-based instruction and other unique programs, is the operational autonomy and accountability the public schools demonstrate.             “No student is assigned to a charter school. The parents and their child choose the school they wish to attend and this power of choice has proven to improve student achievement and outcomes,” said Ms. Roemer.             Louisiana boasts the only all-charter urban public school district in the nation in Orleans Parish.              “We find that some parents and even some decision makers are still very uneducated about what a charter school is. A charter school is a public school like any other except it is founded and led by community leaders to fill a particular need in a community,” said Ms. Roemer. “All are free and open.”             The week’s celebrations in Louisiana will model these themes, according to Ms. Roemer:

Local, state, and federal leaders unite to ensure all students have access to a great education through comprehensive charter school laws. The first state charter school law was passed 25 years ago.  ·      Charter schools are getting results by putting kids first.
