62nd Annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair Announces Addition of Two New Scholarships for 2018
 

Five-year, $48,000 donation from Paul and Patty Habeeb Muehlemann will allow local students an opportunity to showcase their scientific work at the regional level
Two new scholarships to be awarded this year at GNO Science & Engineering Fair to be held at Tulane University’s Lavin-Bernick Center on February 26 - March 1

 
NEW ORLEANS (February 20, 2018) – Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, Inc. (GNOSEF) today announced the addition of a $48,000 donation from local businesspersons, Paul and Patty Habeeb Muehlemann. The generous donation, which will be distributed over a five-year period from 2018 to 2022, will support two new scholarships to be given to worthy Senior High School winners and awards for Junior High School winners in the categories of Chemistry and Health Sciences. Additionally, a Gold-Level Sustainability Sponsorship in memory of founding member, Dorothy Van Lue Habeeb, and in honor of Albert F. W. Habeeb, M.D. will help underwrite Fair operations and provide travel for one student and one teacher to travel to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). ISEF draws over 1,600 students from 70 countries with more than $4 million in cash awards and prizes.
 
The new scholarships to be awarded and sponsorship are: 
 
Dorothy Van Lue Habeeb Scholarship and Award
In memory of Dorothy Van Lue Habeeb, founding member of the Greater New Orleans Science Fair, Inc., a $1000 scholarship is presented to a Senior Division student for an outstanding project focused on the study of Chemistry or the use of Chemistry as a tool in scientific inquiry or engineering design - to be presented upon acceptance into a university. A $50 award is presented to an outstanding Junior Division project related to Chemistry. 
 
 Albert F.W. Habeeb M.D. Scholarship and Award
In honor of Albert F.W. Habeeb M.D., a $1000 scholarship is presented to a Senior Division student for an outstanding project focused on Health Sciences - to be presented upon acceptance into a university. A $50 award is presented to an outstanding Junior Division project related to Health Sciences. 
 
 Gold Level 5-Year Sustainability Sponsorship – Paul and Patty Habeeb Muehlemann
2018 - 2022
In memory ofDorothy Van Lue Habeeb, founding member of the Greater New Orleans Science Fair, Inc., and in honor of Albert F.W. Habeeb M.D.  This sponsorship will provide cash awards in the Junior and Senior Divisions and operational funding to help maintain the financial stability of the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, Inc.
 
“My family and I are honored to provide this much-needed funding to the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, which will allow area students the opportunity to continue showcasing their work at the regional level,” said Mrs. Patty Habeeb Muehlemann. “STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education is vitally important to our children’s futures. My family has had a long-standing relationship with GNOSEF, so if we can continue to inspire even just one child through our support, then we know the future will be brighter for everyone in our community.”
 
The addition of the Habeeb-Muehlemann donation will bring the total amount of cash/non-cash awards, prizes, grants and scholarships awarded to GNOSEF 2018 winners/teachers and schools, to more than $65,000.Prizes include a trip for four students and two teachers to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which draws over 1,600 students from 70 countries with more than $4 million in cash awards and prizes. It also includes the Entergy “Powering the Future” scholarship, which is awarded to a deserving female senior, and the Patrick F. Taylor scholarships awarded to the four top finalists in the senior division. Selected category winners at the GNOSEF in New Orleans are also eligible to compete for state honors at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair (LSEF) held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, March 19-21,2018, with those winners also going on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) to be held May 13-18, 2018 in Pittsburg, PA. 
 
More than 300 middle and high school students from the Greater New Orleans area will display the results of their scientific inquiry at the 62nd Annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF), February 26 - March 1 at the Tulane University Lavin-Bernick Center. Student exhibits will be on display to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and Thursday morning. Additionally, student-led tours of the Loyola and Tulane University campuses will be available for GNOSEF participants. Admission to public viewing days is free and open to the community. 
 
GNOSEF is presented by the Greater New Orleans Science Fair Inc., H. Britton Sanderford, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, Entergy Corporation and Tulane University in partnership with Core Element, Loyola University, UNO, and Women for a Better Louisiana,
