Kenilworth Science and Technology School made a strong showing in last week's 2016 Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair, winning eight awards and sending three students on to the state science fair on March 21-23 at LSU.

Kaitlyn Johnson, Aaliyah Martin and Andrew Knott each finished in second place in their respective categories, which qualified them to compete at the state level in the junior division. Kaitlyn's project, "Converting Greenhouse Gases to Synthesis Gas," took second place in the Environmental Engineering category. Aaliyah's project, "Counting On Fingers," was second in Mathematics, while Andrew's project, "Foam Reduced Sloshing," took second in the Materials Science category.

"This was tough competition this year, and we saw some amazing projects from many schools," said Kenilworth science teacher Elkhan Akhundov, who was recently honored by the Baton Rouge Area Chamber as a recipient of the BRAC Excellent STEM Educator Award

. "Our students went up against many of the top-tier magnet and gifted schools and showed why Kenilworth is one of the top middle schools for STEM studies in this area."

This is at least the fourth consecutive year that Kenilworth has sent students to the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair. The annual fair brings together all the top winners from the regional fairs in grades 6-12 for a three-day competition on the LSU campus.

Other Kenilworth students, their projects, ranking and category include Alexzandrea Ursin, "What Liquids Will Damage Your Teeth," 3rd Place, Biomedical and Health Sciences; Nijah King, "Solubility of Refrigerant in Deep Eutectic Solvent," 4th Place, Energy: Chemical; Mystique Price and Elijah Nejad, "The Fizz Inflator," Honorable Mention; Materials Science; Justice Sparks, "Prostate Cancer Classification with a Support Vector Machine Model, 3rd Place, Systems Software; Queasia Stafford, "Air Pollution," 4th Place, Systems Software.
