ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZES 2016 STUDENTS OF THE YEAR WINNERS AND RUNNERS-UP FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
 

Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) Student of the Year finalists, Presidential Scholars and POSSE Scholars on Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
 
NEW ORLEANS – (April 20, 2016) – The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) recognized extraordinary students through the Student of the Year awards program for 2015-16, as well as Presidential Scholars and POSSE Scholars, during the April board meeting on April 19. Students were selected based on criteria measuring academic achievement, leadership skills and character. 
 
“We congratulate and celebrate these students on their impressive academic and personal achievements,” OPSB Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henderson Lewis Jr. said. “Our finalists are great examples of what our students are capable of, and their success reinforces the important work taking place in Orleans Parish schools and classrooms every day. We applaud the incredible efforts of our students, as well as their families and educators, and look forward to their continued success.”
 
The OPSB provided each finalist with a cash award to put towards tuition, sponsored in part by the Jewish Endowment Foundation of Louisiana from the Helen Wiel Young Memorial Designated Fund. 
 
District winner Laura McDonald, a senior at Lusher Charter High School, has participated in the Tulane Scholar Program and Project Lead the Way’s Biomedical Science Program. Additionally, McDonald is the president of Lusher’s National Honor Society and 4-H club, while also participating in philanthropic activities outside of school like New Orleans Central City Lions Club. Upon earning a certificate of artistry in dance at the culmination of the school year, McDonald looks forward to attending Tulane University in the fall.
 
Chanaiyah King, eighth grade district runner up and a student at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, has been named to the school’s honor roll every year. Passionate about science and mathematics, King hopes to become an oncologist. She will attend Benjamin Franklin High School in the fall.
 
Fifth grade district winner Christina You of Lusher Charter Elementary School has demonstrated stellar performance in several areas, including mathematics, violin and visual arts. A swim team member and active participant in Lusher’s Care to Change, You develops and designs initiatives with fellow students to create change in social innovation.
