New Orleans, LA—April 19,2016 – NewOrleans native and Ben Franklin alumna, Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, will speakat Benjamin Franklin High School’s 56th Commencement on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.
 
“Weare grateful to Ms. Charbonnet for agreeing to address this year’s graduatingclass,” said Interim Principal/CEO, Mr. Daniel Casey. “Having such aninternationally renowned success story with a passionate commitment to her artwill be a great send off for our senior class. Her achievement resonates themission of Benjamin Franklin High School.”
 
Ms.Charbonnet, a graduate of the class of 1981, has established herself as adramatic soprano and leading force in the German and contemporary repertoires.Having begun singing Italian and ‘spinto’ Russian roles, she has naturallyprogressed into the more dramatic German soprano – and more recently‘Zwischenfach’ – repertoire. Her intense stage presence has been widely praisedby critics, with the Times proclaiming her a ‘spine-chillingly powerful’performer.
 
InEurope, Ms. Charbonnet has appeared at major opera houses including the GranTeatre del Liceu, Barcelona; Opéra National de Paris; Teatro Real, Madrid; OperFrankfurt; Opéra National de Bordeaux; Deutsche Oper Berlin; Teatro Comunale diFirenze; Teatro La Fenice; and Bregenz Festival. Her major roles include Isoldein Tristan and Isolde (performed in Dallas, Geneva, Salzburg and other cities),Kundry Parsifal, Venus Tannhäuser (Geneva and Toulouse), Sieglinde DieWalküre, and Brünnhilde Der Ring des Nibelungen (both Opéra national duRhin).
 
Recenthighlights include the title role of Ariane et Barbe-bleue (in Barcelona andDijon); Judith Bluebeard’s Castle (Nantes/Angers and Paris); Leonore Fidelio(Teatro San Carlo); Katerina Izmailova Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Florence MayFestival and Teatro Municipal Santiago); Goneril King Lear (Frankfurt); Elektra(Deutsche Oper Berlin, Edinburgh International Festival, and LSO under ValeryGergiev); and Cassandre Les Troyens (Opéra National de Paris). Charbonnet’sconcert repertoire includes Schoenberg’s Erwartung (with Jukka-Pekka Saraste inCologne) and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass (with Pierre Boulez at the BBC Proms).
 
“Iam excited to come home to New Orleans and honored to address the graduatingclass,” said Ms. Charbonnet. “I hope to ensure them of their potential asFranklin graduates, and let them know the boundless possibilities that lieahead.” Ms. Charbonnet will be performing in New Orleans at the BirdfootFestival of Chamber Music May 23 – 29, 2016.
