SIX LOUISIANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS EARN NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON RECOGNITION

BATON ROUGE, La. - The United States Department of Education (USDOE) recognized six Louisiana public schools as 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The Blue Ribbon Schools program honors schools that are either high-performing or have closed achievement gaps, especially among minority or disadvantaged students. These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels. Nominated schools submit applications to the USDOE for the award.

"We want to congratulate these schools and districts for earning this distinguished honor, proving again our students are as smart and capable as any in America," said State Superintendent John White. "The outstanding efforts of the students, faculty, and administration at these schools demonstrate the high level of academic achievement that can be accomplished with hard work, determination, and a shared desire to succeed."

Schools are recognized in one of two performance categories:

· Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among the state's highest-performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school's subgroups and all students over the past five years.

· Exemplary High Performing Schools are among the state's highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels.

For 2015, the USDOE selected the following schools as award recipients:
· Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools:
o Martin Petitjean Elementary School, Acadia Parish
Coming from predominately low-income homes, students in first, second, and third grades at Martin Petitjean Elementary School are empowered through the Leader in Me program, and as a result, excel. The students maintain Leadership Notebooks for personal data tracking and goal setting.

o Pointe-Aux-Chenes Elementary School, Terrebonne Parish
Teachers at Pointe-Aux-Chenes address academic needs by analyzing data to find student strengths and weaknesses. Students are pulled into small groups for enrichment and remediation. A system, developed by the Leadership Team, helps to ensure specific student misconceptions are addressed.

o South Crowley Elementary School, Acadia Parish
South Crowley Elementary School faces a poverty level 113.2 percent greater than the national average. Despite this challenge, students continue to flourish academically and socially through a learning environment centered on mutual respect for students, staff, and parents.

· Exemplary High-Performing Schools:
o Baton Rouge Magnet High School, East Baton Rouge Parish
Baton Rouge Magnet High School pushes the boundaries of conventional learning through best practices, encouraging academic connections that will enhance the vision of the school. To increase academic achievement and enhance creativity in the visual and performing arts, the faculty engages in continual learning and self-improvement within their profession.

o Benjamin Franklin High School, Orleans Parish
Benjamin Franklin High School celebrates unity in diversity and encourages academic excellence. The 2015 graduating class produced 24 National Merit Semifinalists, 10 National Achievement Scholars, 5 National Commended Scholars, 2 National Achievement Outstanding Participants, and 1 National Hispanic Scholar.

o LSU Laboratory School, East Baton Rouge Parish
Elementary and middle school students at Louisiana State University Laboratory School exceed the state average scores on the LEAP and iLEAP tests. LSU Lab School was the first International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in the state with juniors and seniors choosing to complete the Diploma Program or individual IB courses along with other college-preparatory classes.

These schools will be honored November 9-10, 2015, during an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where each will receive an engraved plaque and flag signifying its status as a 2015 Blue Ribbon School.
