David will be speaking abouthis artwork, which is predominately featured throughout the project. Inaddition, Architect Elizabeth Chen will be presenting a slide show on her workin Indonesia.
WHEN:Sunday, October25, 1:30-2:30pm
WHERE:LongueVue Gardens, 7Bamboo Road, NewOrleans, LA 70124
WHY:
The YACS 2nd grade class was chosen to work on this projectby the architect Elizabeth Chen. ElizabethChen designed and constructed a water filtration system in Bunaken, Indonesia, which filters rainwater into clean drinking water for hundreds of high schoolstudents and villagers. Adorning the facility are monochromatic abstractions ofthe water cycle created by YACS 2nd graders.
Mary Rooney, 2nd Grade Lead Teacher & Arts Integration Coach, designed and facilitated the arts integrated project about the water cycle withher class, connecting with a 2nd grade ELA Common Core standard (RI.2.7-Explain how specific images contribute to clarify a text). Students needed tounderstand how to interpret the water cycle diagram from the text before theymade the artwork. The arts integrated project included a reading lesson, adiscussion, and the art making process.
Rooney began the art making process with students engagingin a reflective discussion on how water is a vital source of life for allliving things. Then students read an informational text about the water cycleand studied the diagrams in order to visually understand the processes ofevaporation, condensation, precipitation, and transpiration. Each student drafted a water cycleillustration and then deconstructed the imagery into patterns and shapesinspired by the work of artist Oscar Oiwa. Students combined the abstractedwater cycles with drawings of plants and animals to symbolize the importance ofwater for all living things.
The final works of art were created using sharpie on 18 x 24watercolor paper in the style of Oscar Oiwa and then finished with a grey inkwash. The images of the paintings were then sent to Elizabeth Chen, who compiledthe designs and had them printed on metal panels.
In June, Elizabeth Chen joined the Learn To Live team toconstruct her design in Indonesia. Students' artwork was printed on the metalsiding of the structure and will serve as an eye catching visual elementhighlighting the filtration system.
Learn To Live aims to provide clean drinking water forseveral hundred students and villagers in Bunaken; increasing basic sanitation, reducing plastic waste and saving countless dollars on importing drinking waterfrom the mainland.
This exhibit will be Longue Vue’s first opening of itsthree-part “Collective Media” series. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
