Twelve Kenilworth students place in regional science fair

Twelve Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School students placed in the recent Region VII Science and Engineer Fair, and four of the students will get the chance to compete at the state fair on March 23-25 at the LSU Student Union.

Kenilworth's showing at the Region VII fair was the best among all open-enrollment schools in the region and second best overall behind Glasgow Middle School, a gifted-and-talented school in the EBR public school system. View all the results here.

The Kenilworth students who are going to the state fair and how they finished in their categories at the regional fair include Monica Deras, 1st place; Ashton Fox, 1st place; Julia Rodriguez, 2nd place; and Andrew Knott, 2nd place. Other Kenilworth students who placed include Justin Starks, 4th place; Adrian Crandal, 4th place; Que' Asia Stafford, 3rd place; Kolby Trosclair, 4th place; Alexzandria Ursin, 4th place; Kaitlyn Johnson, 4th place; Angelina Patton, 4th place; and Carley Whitty, 4th place.

Kenilworth, a state-sanctioned charter school that has a focus on STEM studies, has experienced remarkable success in recent years at science fairs at all levels. Dr. Karen Fontenot, Dean of Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and member of Kenilworth's school board, said Kenilworth's philosophy of combining expert teaching, high student expectations and proactive parental involvement has produced outstanding results.

"The students and their parents deserve the credit. At Kenilworth, we have simply worked hard to create the right environment to allow students to flourish," Dr. Fontenot said.

Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
