Einstein Charter School’s Middle School Debate Team Wins Tournament!




On March 7 at  Xavier University’s Middle School Debate Tournament, Einstein Charter School came home with the first place trophy. Einstein Charter School is a high-performing, o pen-admissions school in New Orleans East with the highest ELL population in the city, serving 1,000 students.


The tally at the end of the tournament was 12-4.  “After last year’s second place finish, we could not be more delighted,” said Linda Manint, seventh grade math teacher and Debate Coach at Einstein Charter School.  “Our students trained for months for this day and they brought home a big trophy!”


“We could not be more proud,” said Principal Sabrina Marsh.   


The student body of Einstein is uniquely diverse with large Vietnamese and Hispanic student populations.   “We love and celebrate the many cultures under this roof,” said C.E.O. Shawn Toranto.  “This victory is a long time coming and goes to show you that our students, when encouraged to pursue their interests, are the best New Orleans has to offer!”


Einstein has other cause for celebration.  In the fall, the school will be opening its third campus, adding 500 more seats.  “We look forward to offering the East its first independent middle school since Hurricane Katrina,” Toranto added. In addition to debate, the school intends to offer middle school students many opportunities for extra-curricular activities including band, dance, sports, and more unique offerings like robotics and table tennis clubs.


In addition to first place overall, many of the school’s competitors took home individual trophies including Tina Nguyen, Joshua Jones, Kenntrel Boyd, Tianna Robinson, Nya Carey, Calvin Desdunes, Quynh Duong, Katlen Lacayo, Mikel Metx, Trinity Myers, Anthony Tran, Huong Tran and Zeta Williams.
