Jonathan Ding of Buchanan Elementary School in Baton Rouge won first place in the contest, which was open to all 4th- and 5th-grade students in Louisiana. Niles Babin of LSU Lab School in Baton Rouge was second, Claire Venable of Zachary Elementary School was third, and Austin Headrick of Copper Mill Elementary in Zachary came in fourth place. Dr. Tevfik Eski, superintendent of Kenilworth, said 446 students from 58 Louisiana public, private, parochial and charter schools registered for the Olympiad, which has been described as an "old school" math contest because students must work out problems using only paper and pencil. The Olympiad draws more students every year, an indication that Louisiana parents are becoming more aware of how important math education is, even for elementary students, Dr. Eski said.

While the students were taking their tests, parents listened to "Speaking of Science" lectures on subjects including geology, computers and biomaterials from leading professors from LSU, UL-Lafayette, UNO and Xavier University.
