Lusher Charter School studentnamed 2014 National Student Poet at White House today
Lusher senior one of five in nation to be honored by First Lady at reading
Lusher Charter Schoolsenior Madeleine LeCesne, 18, was among five students appointed as a 2014National Student Poet at the White House today by First Lady Michelle Obama. The First Lady hosted a poetry readingin the Student Poet’s honor where LeCesne and fellow honorees read originalpoems for the audience.
The five recipients werechosen from over 13,000 entries nationwide for the honor.
Earlier in the springLeCesne was named as one of 37 poetry ambassador semi-finalists as part of theselection process for the new class of National Student Poets.
The other Student Poetswere Weston Clark of Zionsville, Indiana; Ashley Gong of Sandy Hook,Connecticut; Cameron Messinides of Camden, South Carolina; and Julia Falkner ofLouisville, Colorado.
The President’sCommittee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and LibraryServices, and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers partner to presentthe National Student Poets Program (NSPP), the country’s highest honor foryoung poets (grades 9-11) presenting original work. Annually, five students areselected for one year of service as literary ambassadors, each representing adifferent geographic region of the country.
“Lusher is so proud ofMaddie and her exemplary creative and courageous way of thinking,” said LusherCEO Kathy Riedlinger. “Maddie defines the importance of creativity in learningand critical thinking. She has been writing since elementaryschool and we are thrilled to see her talents and hard work recognizednationally.”
LeCesne is earning aCertificate of Artistry from Lusher studying Creative Writing with teacher BradRichard. An accomplished creativewriter, Madeleine also received an honorable mention nationally from YoungArtsfor a short story and was a participant in the KenyonReview Young Writers program.

By elevating and showcasing their work for anational audience, the NSPP program strives to inspire other young people toachieve excellence in their own creative endeavors and promote the essentialrole of writing and the arts in academic and personal success. National StudentPoets are selected from a pool of National Medalists in Poetry through theScholastic Art & Writing Awards, the exclusive pathway to be considered forthe program. Each year, from this pool of Gold and Silver Medal winners, 35semi-finalists are selected based on creativity, dedication to craft andpromise. Their work is then submitted to a distinguished jury for the finalselection of five National Student Poets. Each National Student Poet is invitedto create and implement a service project that will expand the reach of theprogram and its engagement with audiences in each region during the course ofhis or her ambassadorial year.
