“Charter school law is still arelatively new field and many local attorneys may find this free CLEvery valuable given the number of public charter schools in thestate, especially the greater New Orleans area,” said SarahVandergriff, LAPCS Legal Director. “Ideally, learning more about the legalconstruct and requirements of charter boards will pique the interest of theattendees and inspire some to look into volunteering as a charter governingboard member.”

Copies of the handbook will also be madeavailable to every charter governing board and charter school in the Stateof Louisiana.

“There is no other resource like this out therefor charter board members,” said Christy Kane, Louisiana Appleseed.“The volunteers serving on governing boards devote an incredibleamount of time and effort to their school but manytimes aren’t given legal guidance. Great intentions alone don’t make greatboards. They need to be paired with a clearunderstanding of their role and legal requirements. That is what thishandbook intends to provide.”
