New Orleans, LA, June, 18, 2014 – Dr Pepper Snapple and national non-profitKaBOOM! have announced Mildred Osborne Charter School as one of 10 finalistsfor the 2014 Let’s Play Video Contest.
The video contest is part of Let’s Play, a community partnership led byDr Pepper Snapple to get kids and families active nationwide. It is designed to give organizations inlocal communities the opportunity to submit videos illustrating their need foran improved play space for a chance to win one of five $20,000 grants, whichcan be used to build a new playground or improve an existing one. Each day, until June 27, community members and play advocates can vote for their favoriteplayground video on facebook.com/letsplay.
“Studies have shownthat play is vital to children’s development in communication and emotion,”said Andrew Shahan, CEO of ARISE Schools. “We encourage our scholars toactively play during recess and physical education classes every day to buildthese skills. Additionally, active play is linked to increased creativity andhealthy physical development. All of these areas benefit our scholars andbolster their focus towards success during the school day, as well as in highschool, college, and beyond.”
Since the contest launched on April 21, videos from cities across theU.S. have been submitted for consideration. Of those, 10 finalists were selectedby a panel of judges, including Mildred Osborne Charter School.
Originally opened as a school in1969, Mildred Osborne has been a part of its community in New Orleans East formany years. Unfortunately, along with most of the city, the school site wasdestroyed during Hurricane Katrina. With government funding through FEMA, a newschool building was developed, but the cost of a playground was not covered. That facility is where Mildred Osborne Charter School now resides. As a schoolserving scholars enrolled in kindergarten through seventh grade next year,Mildred Osborne Charter School currently does not have a playground. If arecipient of the Let’s Play grant, the school’s new playground will provide scholars a safe place to play during recess tolearn and express themselves in developmentally appropriate ways.
Created in 2011, Let’s Play provides the tools, places and inspirationto make play a daily priority. The initiative began with a three-yearcommitment to KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that allkids get the balance of active play they need to thrive. Through the firstthree years, they built 41 playgrounds, with more than 2,300 DPS employeescontributing nearly 19,000 volunteer hours in the construction, and providedgrants ranging from $500 to $30,000 for the improvement of another 2,004playgrounds by the end of 2013.
Unstructured, child-directed playhas proven to help kids develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually, yet today’s kids have less time and fewer opportunities to play than anyprevious generation. As a result of expanded Let’s Play grants and projects, more than 1 million kids will benefit from new or improved playgrounds aroundthe nation between 2014 and 2016.
