New Orleans, LA – Dr Pepper Snapple and national non-profitKaBOOM! have announced ReNEW Schools as one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Let’sPlay Video Contest.

The video contest is part of Let’s Play, a community partnership led byDr Pepper Snapple to get kids and families active nationwide. It is designed to give organizations inlocal communities the opportunity to submit videos illustrating their need foran improved play space for a chance to win one of five $20,000 grants, whichcan be used to build a new playground or improve an existing one. From June 16to June 27, community members and play advocates can vote for their favoriteplayground video on facebook.com/letsplay.

“We are educating the whole childat Dolores T. Aaron,” said John Gravier, ReNEW School Leader. “This opportunitywould provide the kids with necessary peer-to-peer interaction that can helpthem grow.”

Since the contest launched on April 21, videos from cities across theU.S. have been submitted for consideration. Of those, 10 finalists wereselected by a panel of judges, including ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron.

At ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron, schoolleaders want to give the kids 20-25 minutes a day for play in order toencourage strong social interaction and community learning. Though they have alarge yard, the space presents a problem; there is nothing to play with or playon. The school’s goal is to focus on educating the “whole child,” whichrequires an active body and an active mind. This playground will be open tomore than 500 students.

Created in 2011, Let’s Play provides the tools, places and inspirationto make play a daily priority. The initiative began with a three-yearcommitment to KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that allkids get the balance of active play they need to thrive. Through the firstthree years, they built 41 playgrounds, with more than 2,300 DPS employeescontributing nearly 19,000 volunteer hours in the construction, and providedgrants ranging from $500 to $30,000 for the improvement of another 2,004playgrounds by the end of 2013.

Unstructured, child-directed playhas proven to help kids develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually, yet today’s kids have less time and fewer opportunities to play than anyprevious generation. As a result of expanded Let’s Play grants and projects, more than 1 million kids will benefit from new or improved playgrounds aroundthe nation between 2014 and 2016.
