Kenilworth to share success story at international education conference

Dec. 9, 2014

News Release

Leaders from Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School have been invited to an international conference in England next month to share the story of how the Baton Rouge school has achieved academic success by motivating disadvantaged youth to learn and excel in STEM studies.

The prestigious Association for Science Education Conference asked Kenilworth administrators to conduct a workshop on the school's transformation from a failing middle school to one of the top open-enrollment schools in Baton Rouge. Since it became a charter school in 2009, Kenilworth has shown consistent growth in its school performance scores and percentage of students performing at or above grade level.

"We are pleased to welcome international expertise at our Annual Conference, here in the UK," said Marianne Cutler, ASE's Director of Curriculum Innovation. "We are especially looking forward to hearing how Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School has successfully implemented a STEM-based program that serves underrepresented children. STEM education is a cross-cutting issue and the opportunity to share learning and good practice amongst colleagues from different countries and cultures is both informative and motivating."
The workshop, led by Kenilworth Superintendent Dr. Tevfik Eski and board member Dr. Eugene Kennedy, will focus on how the school's focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) studies, its teaching methods and high expectation for students have led to student success. Kenilworth students routinely are among the state's highest performers in science fairs, and one student's project received an international grand prize award earlier this year. Kenilworth also has been a state leader in promoting STEM education by creating and hosting the Louisiana STEM Expo and the Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad.
The ASE conference takes place January 7-10, 2015, at the University of Reading, about 40 miles west of London. The school's participation is sponsored by the conference and other private donors.

Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
