Louisiana BAEO and the Urban League of Greater New Orleans Holds
City-wide Common Core Town Hall Meeting on August 26

Elected officials and education leaders will address impact on Louisiana students

NEW ORLEANS (August 25, 2014) - On Tuesday, August 26, the Black Alliance for Educational Options and the Urban League of Greater New Orleans will hold a Common Core Town Hall meeting at McDonogh 35 Senior High School from 6 PM to 8 PM. Co-hosted by State Sen. Conrad Appel (R), Rep. Wesley Bishop (D) and State Rep. Walter "Walt" J. Leger, III (D), parents and community members will have an opportunity to hear directly from their elected officials and school leaders, ask specific questions about state standards and receive up-to-date information on the current Common Core and Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) lawsuits.

What: Common Core Town Hall meeting presented by Louisiana BAEO and the Urban League of Greater New Orleans.

Who: Confirmed panel members include: State Sen. Conrad Appel (R); State Rep. Wesley Bishop (D); State Rep. Walter "Walt" J. Leger, III (D); Chief of Staff Rebecca Kockler, Department of Education; Deputy Superintendent of Charter Schools Kathleen Padian, Orleans Parish School Board; Mickey Landry, Executive Director of Choice Foundation and Navis Hall, parent advocate. When: Tuesday, August 26, 2014 from 6 PM - 8 PM.

Where: Mc Donogh 35 Senior High School located at 1331 Kerlerec Street.

Why: The debate at the state level around Common Core, recently filed lawsuits and the abundance of media coverage has created a great deal of confusion and misinformation. BAEO, in partnership with the ULGNO, seeks to create an opportunity for parents and community leaders to learn the basics of Common Core State Standards, and define the debate at the state level over these education standards. Additional details will be provided regarding implementation for the 2014-15 school year and the current PARCC and Common Core lawsuits.
