Do you know a student who might benefit from taking AP Calculus BCbut doesn't have the course offered at their school? Advanced Placement (AP)Calculus BC is a full-year, university-level course. It covers more than the"AB" version and may be appropriate for very capable math students.Many schools are not able to offer "BC" due to limited demand. Nowstudents can take a class they need online with a state-approved courseprovider and have the credit applied to their transcript. These courses areoffered through the Louisiana Supplemental Course Academy, SCA (formerly"Course Choice").
 
Ben Franklin High School is offering AP Calculus BC online tostudents in Louisiana as part of theSCA. Franklin math teacher Michael Masterson, who has extensive experienceteaching calculus and working with students online, teaches the course. He alsoteaches the regular face-to-face AP Calculus BC class at Ben Franklin. Onlinecalculus students will have regular opportunities to meet with him face-to-faceat Ben Franklin on Saturdays. The meetings are optional and the course may betaken completely online.
 
This course is available at no cost for Louisiana public and charterschool students, thanks to $7.5 million allocated by the legislature through theSCA. Funds are allocated to schools on a per-pupil basis and unused funds willbe given to other schools. Students at private schools are welcome to take thecourse but must pay for it.
