FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 17, 2021  Sen. Karen Carter Peterson Files Green Army ‘Right to Know’ Legislation to Protect Public, First Responders From Hazardous/Toxic Releases  New Orleans, LA – Sen. Karen Carter Peterson introduced SB44 for the 2021 legislative session to protect the health and safety of the public, land, air and water.    Beginning on August 1, 2021, SB44 would require the Department of Public Safety and Corrections to utilize public notification systems to aid in the dissemination of emergency conditions inside industrial facilities such as hazardous releases that could reasonably expect to affect public health and safety beyond the facility.    SB44 would also change present law by requiring operators to report any emergency condition to the department or hazardous release within 15 minutes from discovery of the condition.    Sen. Karen Carter Peterson released the following statement after the bill’s filing:

 “I believe a mother with small children playing in the yard and an elderly woman sitting on her front porch have the right to know as quickly as possible if a toxic cloud of cyanide or sulfuric acid is heading their way. It is beyond frustrating to me that here we are in 2021 and legislation like this needs to be filed to protect the public and our environment.”             Founder of the Green Army, Retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, had this to say:    “Sometimes, the best weapon to protect yourself and your family from dangerous events is the technology you have in your hand or in your living room. If we can get a tornado warning on our cell phone or an emergency alert on our television about a storm in the Gulf that hasn’t even made landfall yet, then we sure as hell ought to be able to get a warning when there’s an explosion at a nearby plant so that we don’t get gassed by some cancer-causing toxic chemical while we’re boiling crawfish in the driveway.”    The full text of the bill can be found here.
