Last week, the American people got a taste of what we can accomplish when we get organized and win tough races like the Senate special elections in Georgia. We passed the American Rescue Plan -- a comprehensive, progressive COVID relief package to help those who are struggling the most.

This pandemic hit Louisiana hard. It closed the doors of our small businesses, and it recast a light on racial and economic inequities in our state. It caused setbacks to our students’ education and families are still struggling.

I'm relieved this bill is helping families with measures like direct cash payments and unemployment insurance, but we have to do more. I'm talking recurring monthly assistance, continued aid for state and local governments, and so much more. This bill can only be seen as the beginning.)

Remember, not a single Republican voted to pass this legislation. Despite all their big talk, not a single one stepped up! For me, that's all the reminder I need that we can't count on the other party to step up when called upon.

We need leaders who have a proven track record of fighting for progress. Lives are literally at stake, and this is not the time to waver or back down to the Republicans' complete disinterest for those suffering through this pandemic. No half-measures. No fake sympathy. We need actual results.

Our future has to be won through grassroots organizing and doing the work. That's our objective over the next four days here in Louisiana's 2nd District. And I'm honored to have your support in this special election.
