ADAY FOR AND ABOUT WOMEN’S HEALTH IS PLANNED IN THREE LOUISIANA CITIES
TheLouisiana Center for Health Equity (LCHE) is hosting three, one-day retreatsthat starts at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Women’s Retreat 2012: Celebrating Wellness and Culture will offereducational seminars, health exhibitors, health screenings, and physicalactivities. Each retreat will focus on providing vital health information to increasehealth awareness among women across the state.
Participantsshould wear comfortable clothing for a day full and may take part in variousactivities designed especially for women: maintaining, moving and nourishingthe body. Retreat options include Zumba, belly aerobics, nutrition, hearthealth and wellness in general. Health screenings will be offered.
We are very excited to be undertaking thisproject for the first time,” said Alma C. Stewart, President of LCHE. “We arelooking forward to successful and enriching retreats. This initiative is soimportant because of the huge women’s health care disparities across thenation, and more specifically in Louisiana. According to a recent reportpublished by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Louisiana ranked worse than averageand 50th among the states for social determinants, including ranking 50th forwomen in poverty. Louisiana ranked second among the states with the highestneighborhood segregation. Furthermore, also among these social determinants,42% of African-American women in Louisiana are the head of households withchildren as compared to 15.6% for Caucasian women and African-American womenwith no high school diploma at 24.8%, is more than twice that of Caucasianwomen at 9.7%.”

LCHEis launching this initiative in collaboration with the Louisiana LegislativeWomen’s Caucus Foundation and in partnership with United Healthcare CommunityPlan. These women’s retreats will be hosted by Senator Sharon Weston Broome,President Pro Tempore, Louisiana State Senate along with LCHE. Blue Cross BlueShield of Louisiana, A. Charles Stewart Consultants and ExxonMobil arecorporate sponsors. The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Office ofWomen’s Health has been invited.
