Dear Cheron,
On behalf of the BioDistrict New Orleans Board of Commissioners and staff, it is
 my pleasure to publish this biweekly newsletter about the plans, opportunities 
and activities of the District.
In our last issue of our newsletter we focused on the Built Environment and what
 it means to our health and long term perspective. Clearly, there is a growing body
of evidence that we are in deed a product of our environment. If you missed it, 
go back to our archive and open the link to Krista Tippett's "Evolving City". It
 is worth the 51 minutes she spends on a topic relevant to our holistic approach
 to economic development.
Today, we will focus on the Creative Endeavor, where and how it takes place. It 
is happening in New Orleans without most of us seeing the change.
We ask for your continued support of our mission, as we launch into the implementation
phase of creating thousands of new, high paying jobs, better healthcare and new 
educational opportunities in a sustainably built environment. Building the ecosystem
necessary to support this industry is difficult but critical work that will be the
reason this effort, unlike past efforts, will succeed.

The Third Annual BioTech Day has been scheduled for October 23rd and will feature
two internationally renown urban planners Mr. Tom Murphy of the Urban Land Institute
and Mr. David Dixon of Goody Clancy.

Tom Murphy, ULI

Mr. Tom Murphy is a senior resident fellow, ULI/Klingbeil Family Chair for urban
 development. Murphy, former mayor of Pittsburgh, lead the conversion of Pittsburgh
from a steel based industry economy to Meds and Eds, an Innovation Economy based
 on University research. He will speak to what it will take for New Orleans to make
a similar change.

David Dixon, Goody Clancy

Mr. David Dixon, the Principle In Charge of Goody Clancy, will speak about the integration
of the City Master Land Use Plan, the BioDistrict Master Plan, innovation districts
in Boston, MA and Seattle, WA and other planning efforts underway like the Claiborne
Avenue Corridor Study.

BioDistrict New Orleans: Center of Excellence for Creative Endeavors

To create and sustain a competitive advantage, the New Orleans research and commercialization
community must institutionalize

the innovation process by creating an environment in

which creative thinking is central to our values, assumptions

and actions.

The Growth Challenge

Consistency is the hallmark of success whether we are speaking of sports, business
or innovation. The need to stay ahead of the competition requires inventiveness 
at the individual, community and system levels. As university research blossoms 
into new start-ups and those companies grow, new market demands, new capital, competition
and a consistent reinvestment strategy will be required to create and maintain a
 culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Long term economic growth also creates
a need for an expanded ecosystem that includes synergy between old and new facilities,
the business and political communities, all levels of education and predictable 
reinvestment. Maintaining this growth pattern requires us to increase the operational
scale beyond the start-ups to larger companies.

Growth will strain the entrepreneurial philosophy that has driven the early success
unless there is a re-investment in recruitment, investment in new concepts, and 
funding sources to bridge the "valley of death" that often kills innovation. Otherwise,
we will return to the days of old with disjointed islands of data, knowledge, and
intelligence that can complicate the investment and innovation decision-making processes.

Reducing investors tolerance for risk is achieved by eliminating uncertainty through
a transparent economic development processes and the development of an ecosystem
 -- both of which require significant resources.

Addressing the challenge -- Center of Creative Endeavors

Sustaining an innovation and entrepreneurial culture requires communities to create
environments where creative thinking is central to corporate values, actions and
 investments. Innovative companies require employees who seek new opportunities,
 accept risk, collaborate well with others and commit themselves to the organization.
These companies also require communities and their political and business leadership
that will work to create the kind of environment that will guide and promote innovative
behavior. New Orleans is on the right path but we need to start thinking about the
role of public investment to support the long term growth.

Like other major urban areas, New Orleans has been blessed with an influx of young
people interested in contributing to the community. We have witnessed an unprecedented
growth of entrepreneurial spirit. Now we have to capture that energy and root it
 deeply into the community to enjoy the long tern economic benefits.

Five years ago the word was that we were too late to the game because other states
had invested early and big. We have proved that post-Katrina there is enough QUALITY
science with commercialization potential at our member universities (LSU, Tulane,
Xavier) to make a claim for a share of the bioscience industry. The key drivers

Tulane University School of Medicine and Johnson & Wales University announced a 
groundbreaking long-term collaboration that unites doctors and chefs in improving
the nation's health through the teaching of culinary medicine.

For the first time, a medical school and a major culinary institution plan to implement
a fully integrated, comprehensive joint curriculum for doctors, medical students,
chefs and the community focused on the significant health role that food choices
 and nutrition play in preventing and managing obesity and associated diseases in
America.

Facilities to house this and other similar programs are part of the BioDistrict 
Master Plan.

The BioDistrict is growing. Lots of new construction proceeding, new investment 
in the offering!
In every way we are succeeding in creating the positive buzz and increasing in size
the number of commitments to attract outside investment and provide for quality,
 better paying jobs and economic opportunity for New Orleanians.
BioDistrict New Orleans has created a special group on LinkedIn called Bio New Orleans

builds. In five months, more than 407 (up 33 since the last newsletter) multi-disciplined
professionals have joined and started sharing ideas, leads, knowledge and contacts.
Some are locals, some ex-pats and some have never been to New Orleans and are sharing
in our growth and want to stay in touch.

Building the Ecosystem
Core Elements - Promoting Quality Teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics

Core Element supplies teachers with the tools to ensure students will be ready for
the opportunities ahead.

Building the Ecosystem of Support:

To be competitive in the Innovation Economy, we must make sure school children have
the basic skills in science, technology, engineering and math.  The BioDistrict 
will open more jobs for individuals with training in these areas.

As a nonprofit 501(c)3 Core Elements supplies teachers with the tools to ensure 
students will be ready for the opportunities ahead.

One way you can support Core Elements is by attending the August 15 fundraiser sponsored
by the Society of Petroleum Engineers:
