[Kreweoftruth] Patient Advocates: DHH needs to hear from you

There is still time to submit comments to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals on the pharmacy benefits carve-in to Bayou Health. 

Throughout the series of public forums DHH held to allow input on the draft proposal for the pharmacy benefits carve-in - as outlined in the concept paper Modernizing Louisiana's Medicaid Pharmacy Program - it became clear that details on crucial patient protections were lacking. DHH acknowledged this and requested patient advocates and provider organizations to submit specific policy recommendations, concerns and comments to make the plan better.

We need patient advocates and providers to step up, and speak out.  Submit your comments online by emailing BayouHealth at LA.gov and tell DHH how their plan can improve. Don't hesitate to cc your legislators and Senate Health and Welfare Committee Chairman David Heitmeier to make sure they get the message. 

Key points include:

Assure continuity of care for patients with chronic conditions
Prior authorization must be efficient and responsive to patient needs in a timely manner
Establish a time limit and clear exemption process for step therapy (don't have to look far to find it, see RS 22:1053)
Protect patient access and the right to make an informed decision: provider formularies must cover all therapeutic classes and be made readily available online
It's more important we do this right, than get it done quick: let the public comment on the final draft rules before they're implemented
Most importantly: It pays to be patient focused because HEALTHY OUTCOMES = COST SAVINGS
