There are actually two nice things about education in today's TP. One is the return of thoughtful reporting by Sarah Carr. The paper, despite its downsizing, has managed to maintain a great focus on public education with Cindy Chang, Andrew Vanacourt, but Sarah's dedication to this topic is obvious in her writing and she has been missed while she focused on a special project. Here's her story today: http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/2011/08/new_orleans_charter_testing_dr.html

The other fascinating news is the nugget in the political column for Orleans, that Teach for America director Kira Orange Jones will be challenging incumbent Louella Givens for the new multi-parish Board of Elementary and Secondary Education spot that includes much of Orleans. The new district is somewhat like the existing Public Service district held by Lambert Boissiere and the new 2nd congressional district. Anyway, Kira Jones has incredible education stats and this is a welcome entry. The story is not yet posted online but here's a nice profile on her: http://www.gse.harvard.edu/news_events/ed/2008/winter/features/orange_jones.html

I'm conflicted about whether or not I want to play in this cycle's elections. Mostly that is because of personal issues which require my attention and I don't want the distraction of working in campaigns, which require long hours, poor pay and a lot of tension. I think I could live without all that for now. I've already let one really great statewide pass, but I'm being woo-ed by all these damn judgeships. Now, let me say this...it is apparently not because of any talents I have as it appears every person in the whole city is on the payroll of one campaign, namely the Regina Bartholomew for Civil District Judge campaign. Ms. Bartholomew is the law partner of Tracie Washington and she is challenging an incumbent Judge and former City Councilwoman, Ellen Hazeur. Ms. Hazeur has decades of elected public service and Ms. Bartholomew has none but all the endorsements are with Ms. Bartholomew. That always makes me wonder what's the deal? Then there is the competing Civil District court race, involving Kris Kiefer, Clare Jupiter and a newcomer Nakisha Ervin-Knott. Kiefer is considered the hands-on favorite, but Ms. Jupiter's entry should be given more consideration. However, Ervin-Knott appears to be eclipsing Ms. Jupiter in the sign war, which is a shame because Ms. Jupiter has a respectable record of legal service; however much of it is linked to the public school board which sometimes turns people off by mere association. Ironically, Ms. Ervin-Knott's claim to fame is she presided over the New Orleans Regional Business Park while a major scandal broke by WVUE reporter Lee Zurik: http://www.fox8live.com/content/news/lee_zurik_investigation/story/Lee-Zurik-Investigation-FBI-is-investigating-New/fRH4ArV9Nk-HXFhT4fftng.cspx
