Corps Enters 11th Hour Plea to Postpone Levees.org's Presentation Scheduled for Today
State Preservation Office Denied the Request
Contact: Sandy Rosenthal,Levees.org 504-722-8172
Despite following the rules and notifying the Corps of Engineers that the Industrial Canal breach site is being considered for listing on the National Register, the Corps, late yesterday, requested the LA State Office of Historic Preservation (SHPO) to postpone Levees.org's presentation until November. Levees.org is scheduled to state its case today to list the Industrial Canal and 17th Street Canal breach sites to the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. The request to postpose was being made "because Mr. Terrence Salt, Federal Preservation Officer and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, as well as the Corps' legal counsel, have not had an opportunity to review the document," said Pat Duncan, historian with SHPO, in an email. The Louisiana SHPO denied the request, and the State Review Committee Meeting agenda will move today ahead as planned.
WHEN: TODAY, AUG. 18, 2011 Levees.org will present at approx 3 p.m.
WHERE: Capitol Park Welcome Center, 7702 North River Road, Baton Rouge
After the presentation, Levees.org will hold a press conference at the same location.
By calling H.J. Bosworth, Jr, at 504-388-2401, members of the press can be given estimated times of presentation and presser.
