National Night Out Against Crime”
 
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
 
This year, Superintendent Ronal W. Serpas’ National Night Out Against Crime is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 6:00 PM.  Chief Serpas hopes that all our neighbors and friends participate in this event to support the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department.  This event is a unified effort for all citizens and members of the criminal justice system to prevent and reduce crime in this great city.
 
Twenty-seven years ago, Officer Kelly Marrione began this program to raise crime prevention awareness, reduce crime and increase the support of local, state and federal law enforcement.  Officer Marrione’s efforts created a great opportunity for all residents to participate in anti-crime programs such as neighborhood watch and the New Orleans Neighbors and Police Anti Crime Council meetings. (NONPACC)  These programs are proven tools that strengthen communities and create better partnerships with citizens and law enforcement.
 
Chief Serpas has started new programs to educate our neighbors and friends and to increase community involvement and reduce violent crime.  Chief Serpas has started the “El Protector” program in the Hispanic and Vietnamese communities and he’s currently accepting applications for his fourth Citizen's Police Academy.  He’s also accepting applications for his new “VoCal” program, “Volunteers Can Lead”.  The VoCal program was designed to allow citizens from the New Orleans area to become volunteers in the NOPD.  The areas include clerical duties in our district stations, tourist information for visitors at the Eighth District Station, greeting and assisting visitors at the reception desk at Police Headquarters, participating in and lending ideas to our Crime Prevention Programs.
 
We encourage all our friends and neighbors to come out and support Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Superintendent Ronal W. Serpas.  We are getting an early start in registering residents for National Night Out.
 
If you plan to host your own block party, please have a representative from your neighborhood watch group, association, business or neighborhood call the Crime Prevention Office at 658-5590 to register.  It’s important that you register so that your district commander and elected officials know where to find you and your group.   
 
If you’re not part of a neighborhood watch group and would like to participate in National Night Out, please come out and meet Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Superintendent Serpas and several elected officials at Mary Queen of Vietnam Church at 5069 Willowbrook Dr in N.O. East.  The Kick Off party begins at 6:00 PM.
