You can make a USB CABLE arrangement for external power supply to hackRF. 
You need to disconnect the power line from the USB Connector which can be 
fed to an external 5V

Android phone/HackRF USB port experience
I have used the SDRTouch and RF analyzer to interface with the RTLSDR ($12 
analog TV tuner) and the HackRF. Both of these draw power heavily from the 
phone. For the SG3 and SG5 I replaced the stock batteries with heavy duty 
after market units available from Amazon. The SG3 had to be rooted to obtain 
permission to access the USB port. The SG5 may not have required rooting ... 
I forget & do not have current access to an SG35. I was able to access these 
radios with both of the above apps on an ASUS Zphone with the micro USB2 
interface, no rooting needed .. but the battery is not removable, thus no 
heavy duty battery replacement is possible for this phone.?

SDRTouch also works with the SdrPlay radio.

I tried to use a newer ASUS Zphone with the micro USB3 interface. This did 
not work immediately but I did not spend any more time with it.

In summary, If you want to use an SDR with an Android phone for anything 
more extensive than a ?quick look? an SG3 or SG5 with the heavy duty 
replacement battery will work well for you.

William, tanks for the suggestion. I just purchased the RfAnalyzer, it
seems to work on the S7. I was fearing no demodulation(just an
analyzer?) but it works, tested on a couple of repeaters and FM radio.

What did you use to inject power? Is there anything readily available? I
hate to mess with USB connector, probably the most unfriendly connector
for DIYers ever.

SdrTouch afaik does not support the hackrf.

In any case I am thinking to add a vanilla SDR stick to get full
duplex/double reception, and maybe easier reception with RPI for stuff
like DAB and ADS-B(not clear to me how difficult is to receive them with
a HackRf).

I'm not certain, because I don't want to break portapack or other add on
boards, but it may be possible for us to toggle a GPIO pin on one of the
headers when we switch to TX mode, if that would help?

Thanks for that offer/suggestion, but it?s already done! I found the TX mode 
signal that drives the TX LED, and it was already brought out to P5. So All 
I had to do was solder some ribbon cable to P5 socket (which is not 
populated). I have it connected to my power amp such that it energizes 
whenever the Hackrf is in transmit mode.

Or to put it differently, :-) If the HackRF would enable the ANT bias when
it was transmitting then it would "just work" as they say.

It's possible that we could add an option for this, but I wouldn't want to
make it the default because there are times when we don't want to turn it
off when switching back to RX mode.
