The previous Saturday, August 2, me and two friends did the Palisade Traverse from Bishop Pass and exited to Glacier Lodge.  I would agree with your recommendation about avoiding going up the U-Notch.

I would recommend the Bishop Pass approach unless you are interested in a wet ice climb.  Linda Sun and I were there mid June and the U Notch from the Palisades Glacier was already ice.  Caught us both by surprise.
