Benjamin Franklin High School Launches Exciting Hands-On Science Workshops for Middle School Students
Calling all young scientists, artists, and innovators in grades 7 and 8! Benjamin Franklin High School is thrilled to announce the Art of Science Spring Workshop Series, a collection of hands-on, mind-expanding experiences designed to bring science to life in the most creative and interactive ways.

>From experimenting with color chemistry to whipping up scientific culinary creations, these four-week programs are the perfect mix of learning and fun! Beginning the week of March 10, each class meets once a week, either after school or on Saturday. There will be a culminating celebration of student work on Friday, April 11, in City Park where participants can bring their friends and families. Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the program is $20, which includes all materials, but we don’t want the price to hold anyone back! Financial assistance is available.

Classes are taught by Ben Franklin arts and science faculty and include:

ColorWorks Lab (Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. | March 11, 18, & 25 and April 1): Ever wondered how light, chemistry, and biology create the colors we see every day? Through hands-on experiments and creative projects, students will dive into the science of pigmentation and discover the secrets behind the vibrant hues of nature, art, and even human skin!

The Chemistry of Photography (Thursdays, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. | March 13, 20, & 27 and April 3): Step into the darkroom and explore the magic of light and chemistry! Students will experiment with traditional photographic processes while uncovering the fascinating science behind capturing images on paper.

The Sound of Science (Saturdays,9 a.m, to 10:30 a.m. | March 15, 22, & 29 and April 5): Feel the beat, hear the waves, and explore the science of acoustics! From music scales to sound design, this workshop will break down the physics of sound in a way that’s as entertaining as it is educational.

Flavor Fusion Lab (Saturdays,9 a.m, to 10:30 a.m. | March 15, 22, & 29 and April 5): Cooking is just delicious science! Students will discover how chemical reactions, emulsions, and physics transform simple ingredients into mouthwatering masterpieces. Get ready to mix, measure, and taste your way through the wonders of the kitchen!
