28 Lake Forest Charter School Students Place in 2024 Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair
15 LFC students will move on to state fair
Lake Forest Charter School (LFC) had 28 students place in various categories of the 2024 Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair, (GNOSEF) and 15 will move on to the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair, announced Chief Executive Officer Mardele Early. Lake Forest Charter School (LFC) had 44 students participating in the GNOSEF at Tulane University.
Two Lake Forest students were the Overall Grand Prize winners of the Junior Division of the 2024 GNOSEF: Mario Myles and Caleb Colbert. Myles has now won this prestigious award for two consecutive years.
LFC had 15 students receive awards who will participate in the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair: 7th graders Dallas Harrell, 1st Place in Plant Sciences; Duy Quat Benjamin Truong, 1st Place in Embedded Systems and Robotics and Intelligent Machines; James Batiste, 1st Place in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology; Kaydence Guillory, 2nd Place in Microbiology; Khonor Jones, 2nd Place in Biomedical and Health Sciences and Engineering; Osayi Igbinoghene, 2nd Place in Energy Sustainable Materials and Design; Rachael Ayler, 2nd Place in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology; Sofia Aidoo, 2nd Place in Environmental Engineering and Tate Theriot, 2nd Place in Physics and Astronomy.
LFC 8th graders who will participate in the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair are: Anthony Nguyen, 1st Place in Microbiology; Caleb Colbert, 1st Place in Animal Sciences; Mario Myles, 1st Place in Biomedical and Health Sciences and Engineering; Ryan Hoang, 2nd Place in Mathematics and Systems Software and Technology Enhances the Arts; Sophia Nguyen, 2nd Place in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Treyshawn Hurley, 1st Place in Engineering Technology: Statics and Dynamics.
Other students who placed at the GNOSEF were: Keilyn Sylvester, Laila Davis, Linh Phan, Paris Aultman, Lailanie LaSalle, Eghosa Igbinoghene, Rae’niyah Banks, Ayden Badon and Z’Mya Forstall.
Several students won special awards sponsored by various local, regional, and national STEM organizations: Kelsey Harry, 1st Place from the Office of Naval Research; Samiree James, 1st Place from the American Society of Civil Engineers-N.O. Branch; Jeanni Dinh, 1st Place from the Structural Engineering Institute of The American Society of Civil Engineers-N.O. Branch; Rychon Garrett, 1st Place from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers-N.O. Section; Lailanie LaSalle, 1st place Broadcom Coding with Commitment; Linh Phan, 1st place from the NASA Earth System Science Award; Anthony Nguyen, 1st Place from the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology and 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge; Treyshawn Hurley, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge; and Caleb Colbert, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge and Grand Award Winner: Project Title: Fishy Fishy in the Sea.
Other award-winning students are: Mario Myles, 1st Place, Albert F.W. Habeeb M.D. Scholarship and Award, 1st Place Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge, Social Media Award, and Grand Award Winner: Project Title: Men; Drink Please!!! Part 2, Effects of Green Tea on Prostate-Specific Antigen; Osayi Igbinoghene, 1st Place American Institute Of Aeronautics and Astronautics-Greater New Orleans Section, and 1st Place-U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); Sofia Aidoo, 1st Place from the Association for Women Geoscientists Foundation and 2nd Place from the MENSA High IQ Society, N.O. Chapter; Tate Theriot, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge; James Batiste, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge; Duy Quat Benjamin Truong, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge, and Dallas Harrell, 1st Place from the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge.
The Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator’s Challenge is a national competition for 6th-8th grade students where the top 10% of participating projects are nominated to compete in the competition in the Fall.
Lake Forest also received the GNOSEF Middle School Award which is presented to schools that have a minimum of ten projects that compete in the Junior Division and also recognizes the successful participation in the science fair. This is Lake Forest’s third year receiving this distinctive award.
Finally, LFC recognizes both Dr. Sharika Hagan and Ms. Marla Watts for winning the Junior Division/Teacher Mentor Award. This award is given to teachers who have gone the extra mile to support their students in the Junior Division. This is Dr. Hagan’s 5th time winning this award and Ms. Watts’s 7th time.
