New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy Senior Adrian Topete is the third cadet in the school’s 13-year MCJROTC program, and the sole honoree from Region 5 covering JROTC units from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Texas, to receive the Legion of Valor Award with Bronze Cross. Cadet Topete is ranked cadet Lieutenant Colonel and serves as the MCJROTC cadet Battalion Commander.

The Legion of Valor - Bronze Cross is awarded to JROTC cadets who demonstrate outstanding performance, dependability, exceptional character, adherence to military discipline and leadership ability.   Awardees must also have an outstanding record of accomplishment academically and within their extracurricular activities.

The award was presented to him and his parents by the program’s Senior Marine Instructor, on behalf of the Academy’s Principal Alexis Long, and Commandant Colonel Christopher Schlafer (Retired). Cadet Topete's father is in active military service.

Since its founding in 2005, this national prestigious award has gone to JROTC students who have served their school and community in an exemplary manner. Only one in each Marine Corps JROTC Region of approximately 6,000 cadets receives this honor. The Legion of Valor organization, who selects the awardees, is made up of veterans who have distinguished themselves by earning either the Medal of Honor or their respective service’s highest award for gallantry.  This Legion of Valor is open to all high school JROTC and college ROTC Cadets.

NOMMA is designated a Purple Heart School because it supports military connected students and their families. NOMMA is a top-rated open admissions charter school serving families from the greater New Orleans area. It is the only public high school in Louisiana where all students are cadets in the U.S. Marine Corps JROTC program.
