Greater New Orleans Collaborative of Charter Schools (GNOCCS) Executive Director Dr. Ken Ducote Presents NOLA-PS School Renaming Processes at International Conference in South Africa
Gqeberha, South Africa – Dr. Kenneth Ducote, Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Collaborative of Charter Schools (GNOCCS) and longtime educator, recently presented at the Annual Conference of the International Society for Educational Planning (ISEP), held from October 7-10 at the Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha.
The conference, themed "Reimagining Education through Engagement: Planning to Unlock the Full Potential of Individuals and Communities," brought together experts and leaders from around the world to explore transformative educational practices.
Dr. Ducote’s presentation, titled "Community Engagement in the Various Rounds of Naming and Renaming K-12 Public School Buildings and Campuses in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA," examined the complex dynamics of renaming public schools in New Orleans, a process intertwined with local history, community identity, and social justice. His insights resonated deeply with the international audience, highlighting parallels between New Orleans' renaming efforts and similar renaming initiatives in South Africa.
"It was an honor to speak to such a distinguished audience about this important topic that impacts us here in New Orleans as well as in South Africa," Dr. Ducote remarked. "Community engagement plays a critical role in how we address historical legacies and shape inclusive futures."
One of the conference organizers noted, “The topic is very apropos for the conference at this time, as South Africa, like many nations, is undergoing a decolonization process. Renaming cities, communities, airports, and other places is part of recognizing our African heritage and honoring human rights champions.”
Dr. Ducote, who is retiring as Executive Director of GNOCCS, also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Doctorate in Executive Leadership Program at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans. His work continues to influence educational planning and policy, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and historical awareness. He is also a past president of ISEP.
