Three Benjamin Franklin High School Students Earn Perfect ACT Scores

NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 28, 2023) – Benjamin Franklin High School is proud to
announce that three seniors, Austin Geng, Elliott Gomes, and Amelia Lovelace, earned a perfect 36 on their ACTs.

Geng is an aspiring computer scientist and mathematician who participates in Mu Alpha Theta, the Computer Science Club, Chinese Culture Club, Academic Games, and Science Olympiad. In his spare time, he likes to code (JavaScript, C++) and play video games (puzzles, platformers, rhythm). This year, he won a gold medal as one of the four high schoolers representing the U.S. at the 35th International Olympiad in Informatics, one of the most prestigious computer science competitions in the world, which this year was held in Hungary.

Gomes is captain of the golf team and president of the Quiz Bowl Team, as well as secretary of the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council. He plays on the school’s basketball team and is active in the Chess Club. In 2023, he was awarded a Congressional Award Gold Medal, Congress’ highest youth honor.

Lovelace is the vice president of the BFHS Drama Club and co-president of the Gender Sexuality Alliance. She hopes to experience fall colors and cold winters next year at college and plans to focus on women's, gender, and sexuality studies.

“We are thrilled to recognize Austin, Elliot, and Amelia’s dedication and resilience,” said Director of Academics Amanda Morehouse. “They not only scored perfect ACT scores, but they also demonstrate their dedication and resilience in their school and community engagement. From computer science and language study to Quiz Bowl tournaments and LGBTQ+ advocacy, these students’ achievements are a testament to their versatility, passion, and commitment to growth.”
