| NSNO Releases Statement On The Supreme Court’s Recent Rulings on Affirmative Action and Student Debt Relief |

At NSNO, we are deeply troubled by the United States Supreme Court’s recent rulings on affirmative action and student loan forgiveness. Both rulings add new challenges to the already challenging path students navigate in making it to and through college. The ruling on student loan forgiveness will affect our educators as well, many of whom are grappling with significant student debt.
By ruling against race-conscious admissions in Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and the University of North Carolina, The United States Supreme Court limits opportunity and removes a powerful tool for diversity and equity in higher education.
At NSNO, we’re proud to support our schools’ efforts to ensure that after our children access a strong K-12 education, their college options match their limitless potential. We know college counselors work closely with students, families, and educators to open doors that have been closed to our students, and students of color everywhere, for far too long.
The young people in our city have accomplished incredible things–this year, we’ve seen scholarship records set and students plan to attend some of the most esteemed colleges in this nation. We know there is still a long way to go before we achieve educational equity, but we are so proud of New Orleans’ students and grateful for their hard work, as well as that of their educators and families. We believe that our students, over 90% of whom are people of color, are an asset to any college and university in this nation. We are frustrated that, with this ruling, the Supreme Court has placed new barriers in their paths.
We are also dismayed by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Biden, President of the United States, Et Al v. Nebraska Et Al, which struck down the sweeping student loan forgiveness that President Biden had promised earlier this year. When we surveyed 700 local educators about their student debt last year, over half owed at least $50,000 in student loans. Teachers need financial security. If we want teachers to stay in the classroom for long careers, we must make their work financially sustainable, and this ruling makes that harder. This ruling also makes the process of applying for financial aid and considering the cost of college all the more daunting for our city’s young people.
Like so many of our partners, we are disappointed by these rulings. We are also undeterred. We remain fiercely committed to the work of educational equity and excellence. We will persist in our commitment to making New Orleans the best place in the country to teach–and that includes ensuring teachers have financial security. We will continue to support our schools as they keep opening doors for students, and preparing NOLA-PS graduates to attend and thrive in the colleges of their dreams. We remain steadfast in our dedication to New Orleans' students, families, educators, and schools.
