NSNO Statement On The 60th Anniversary Of The March On Washington
|
| |
|
Sixty years ago today, 250,000 people gathered on the National Mall in Washington D.C. They came together for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to dream of and advocate for a better future. They came together to build that future.
Sixty years later, we are still building it. Our nation has made great progress, but we haven’t yet met the ideals that Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, and many others described so powerfully that day. We are still striving to meet the ideals that they marched for.
Dr. King spoke that day of “the fierce urgency of now.” He said, “Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.”
At NSNO, we feel that fierce urgency. Our nation made a promise to its children–that each of them should receive an excellent education. As a nation, we have yet to come through for every child.
As an organization, we strive to deliver on that promise. We won’t stop working until all of our schools have what they need to help their students and educators thrive. We believe that fighting for our schools means fighting for our collective future.
Today, we look to the past to move us forward for the future–one in which every school has all that they need, and every child can reach their dreams. Our children have limitless potential, and every day, our schools are helping them meet it.
We are motivated by the bravery and the action of the people who came together on the National Mall sixty years ago. We know each one of them had their own motivation, their own stories, and their own fire within them as they gathered.
Those stories inspire us and their vision still lives in us as we strive for a better future through education for all.
