“It’s Mardi Gras morning!”
Everywhere else, it’s just another Tuesday, but in New Orleans, Mardi Gras Day is the culmination of the Carnival season. Across the city, citizens of all ages celebrate through music, dancing, parades, costumes, and distinctive traditions. For its third annual writing contest, The Historic New Orleans Collection asks students in grades 6 through college to create an original short story that explores Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans. Take us on a narrative journey as your main character wakes up, gets ready, and celebrates a Carnival tradition on Fat Tuesday. Here are some questions to consider that can help you get started writing your short story.
   - Where does your character live? In what neighborhood?
   - Do they wear a costume? What does it look like?
   - What will they see, hear, and experience?
   - Does your character have a favorite Mardi Gras spot?
   - Do they have a unique Mardi Gras tradition?
   - Will they watch parades? Which ones? Who will your character spend the day with?
   - What will your character eat and drink?

Contest Guidelines

   - The contest is open to students in grades 6–12, plus currently enrolled college students, in the United States and U.S. territories.
